Business IS Political
When I started Loulette Bride in 2015, the world was in a very different place. Obama was in office, progress was slowly but surely happening, and reading the news in the morning didn’t throw you into a depression spiral.
So, in the bliss that was Obama’s 2015, I thought I would keep politics out of my new business. I thought, “I am trying to reach retailers all over the country, I don’t want to immediately alienate myself.”
Fuck. That.
Needless to say, that policy did not stick. The values that I founded this brand on - environmental responsibility, size and color inclusivity, gender equality, LGBTQ+ equality - are literally all on the ballot in 3 short weeks.
We do everything we can to be environmentally responsible, because we understand science and trust experts when they tell us that climate change is the biggest existential threat facing our world today. Meanwhile, we are living under an administration that literally has rolled back 100 environmental regulations.
We celebrate diversity, welcome all bodies, and know that each one of them MATTER. And that all lives don’t matter until BLACK LIVES MATTER. Instead, the administration bans diversity training.
We know that women deserve equality, and the government has no right to make decisions about our bodies. Meanwhile, the sitting president has dozens of accusations of sexual misconduct.
We know that LOVE IS LOVE IS LOVE IS LOVE. Thanks to the hard work by GLAAD, you can see all the ways the current administration discriminates against our LGBTQ+ friends.
On top of all this, we closed our business for months, and are so grateful we did not have to shut our doors forever, as so many others have been forced to do. Of course, this is because the current administration lied to the American people, mismanaged the greatest public health crisis in a century, and, well, you all know who has the number 1 spot in the world.
So, business IS political. And we are not going to keep quiet about what’s right.
Love you all so much, Loulette lovelies! Stay strong, stay woke, and VOTE, VOTE, VOTE.
