To Veil or not to Veil?

To Veil or not to Veil?

One of the most common questions from Brides…

We hear it all the time! It’s your final dress fitting and you are unsure…is it too much? Will it make my mom happy? Do I even need it? WELL, at the end of the day, it is YOUR wedding, so do whatever feels best! However, we would love to empower you with some history and info to help you make yet another decision about your big day!

Where did wearing a Veil even come from?

Wedding veils can be traced back to the Greeks and Romans who believed it would help ward off evil spirits and also deliver an “untouched maiden” to the groom. Kinda ew- but it was a different time. They also hid the bride’s face from the groom until the ceremony. The veil was usually a bright color to continue to scare off those evil spirits and was not white until the 19th century.

There is also religious significance- the Hijab for Muslin women, and the Burqa worn by women in some Islamic traditions. In Jewish tradition, the Bedeken is the unveiling of the bride for the groom-to-be, which is a reference to the Biblical story of Jacob. In Christianity, the veil represents the brides modesty, purity, and goodness. PHEW, who knew?!

Ok, now I know a lot, but do I wear one!?

It truly depends on what YOU want and how you want to FEEL. At this point, the veil is truly a fashion statement that can add some drama to your bridal look, and somewhere we can get creative! Wear a long veil with mini dress, or a short veil with a gown, a pale blue veil for your “something blue”, or a sassy veil with embroidery like our Blondie Veil. It can make you feel more romantic, or make you feel over the top in the best way! We say go with your gut! PLUS if you don’t go with a veil, there are so many other accessories you can incorporate!

Capes, Hair Accessories, & Flowers

A funky alternative to a veil is a cape, like our Lola Cape! But if a veil or cape seems like too much for your vibe, check out some gorgeous hair accessories, like clips and crowns from Emma Katzka! You could also incorporate a flower crown, fresh flowers pinned in your hair, whatever makes you feel comfortable and gorgeous. The rule is there are no rules.
