LET’S TALK ABOUT
Why we don’t use Feathers, Fur, or Leather
At Loulette, we do everything we can to be sustainable and environmentally friendly. Simply put, there is NO humane or ethical way to use new feathers, furs, or leathers in fashion.
As gorgeous as an ostrich feather trim can be, there is no humane way to harvest feathers, as they must be plucked from animal skins or derived post-mortem. The bleaching and dyeing process also causes pollution and water contamination. Instead of feathers, we like to use FRINGE!
Using new fur skins and leather hides also has serious environmentally consequences. Besides the obvious animal cruelty needed to obtain the skins and furs, the production, tanning, and farming of fur and leather contributes to climate change, land devastation, pollution, and water contamination.
While there are faux alternatives, they are arguably just as bad. Although clever marketing teams have greenwashed it to be called “vegan” leather and fur, it is most often made from polyvinyl chloride or polyurethane. Both of these materials are made from fossil fuels and take many centuries to break down.
So, instead of using these products or finding faux alternatives, we simply DESIGN WITHOUT THEM. There is NO need for leather, fur, or feathers in fashion.
There are, however, some incredible innovations, such as leather alternatives made from apples and coconuts!
There is also always VINTAGE. While it’s a debatable topic, I personally lean towards the side of vintage being acceptable and sustainable, as it does not contribute towards continued animal cruelty or environmental damage.
As with anything you spend your money on, it is so important to consider both your values, and those of the company you are supporting. At Loulette, we are always striving to be a place you can be proud to support.
